Apple Watch Series 4, introduced on September 12, 2018, is the fourth version of the Apple Watch. The first Apple watch debuted in 2015. Hence, the series 4 ranking the fourth of its sibling but the first in upgrades.
The Apple Watch 4 was unveiled alongside the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in California. The design alone is a big upgrade, with the screen offering far more visibility. It also offers health benefits to help users monitor their health records.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Series 4 is its face. Apple Smartwatch 4 has been substantially redesigned, upgraded internally. The watch is now equipped with a range of new health and fitness features compare to its predecessor.
Despite the redesign, Apple Watch Series 4 models continue to work with all previous Apple Watch bands, both first and third party.
Apple has enlarge the watch’s size and made some subtle but important changes to refine the design. The Apple Watch 4 is coming in four variants: 40mm and 44mm sizes, and with or without LTE.
This makes the watch much wider than previous generation Apple Watches, which came in 38mm or 42mm options. The new design spots a rounded edges that curve away and towards the wrist.
The rear of the Watch is ceramic and sapphire to add the little bit of glitz. This design helps get a strong cellular signal. Apple Series 4 comes in three aluminum finishes silver, gold, and space gray.
Apple’s made a new Watch Face to help take advantage of the larger screens. It features eight new “complications”. These let you change what the corner shows. It allows you add shortcuts to things such as your favourite contacts, time zones you need to keep track of, or commonly used apps and services.
Apple Watch 4 is said to still feature the same OLED technology as before also lacking the ‘always-on’ display feature. However, Apple has upgraded the display panel to an LTPO.
The Apple series 4 is the comapany’s largest apple watch display. The 40mm model’s OLED screen features a resolution of 394×324, and the 44mm model sports a 448×368 resolution .
The display brightness is still the same with Series 3, with up to 1,000 nits. This enhance the display is brighter, and beautiful.
The Apple watch 4 screen is strong, dynamic and colorful, and the new Watch faces really add to the mix.
The fitness smarts have been augmented in a couple of ways. This watch has been know for its effectiveness as a fitness device over the years.
One of the main features of the Apple Watch 4 is the introduction of the new electrical heart sensor. This new feature helps take an electrocardiogram (ECG) reading using a new ECG app.
Although, The ECG feature was not available in the Apple Watch Series 4 at launch, but it was added through the watchOS 5.1.2 update, introduced in December 2018.
This feature amps up the Watch’s already impressive heart-rate monitoring features and notify if something irregular is detected. It has an improved tracker for checking how your ticker is beating. The Apple Watch Series 4 also features a next-generation optical sensor that can send heart rate notifications when it is too low or too high.
The ECG app is exclusive to the Series 4, because it relies on the electrodes running through the sapphire crystal-and-ceramic back and Digital Crown to take the reading.
Apple has received FDA clearance in the U.S. for these new features, hence, ECG readings are limited to the United States at this time.
The Apple Watch S4 can also detect falls, via its improved accelerometer, gyroscope and optical heart rate sensors. Fall detection works via a combination of G-force impact and detection of arm and hand placement when falling.
The sensors now have twice the dynamic range and can detect and read motion data eight times faster. Hence, the Watch can detect when you fall over. When the Apple Watch Series 4 detects a fall, it sends you an alert, which can be used to call emergency services if you’re injured.
If the Apple Watch Series 4 detects no movement for a minute after a fall, it automatically calls emergency services using the built-in SOS feature in the Apple Watch. It also sends a message with your location to all of your emergency contacts, a useful feature if a fall is indeed serious and life-threatening
Apple new watch can also detect abnormally low sedentary heart rate. These includes one that’s looking out for atrial fibrillation (AF) which could lead to life-threatening complications. There will be a pop-up if this condition is detected for prevention.
Of course, the Apple watch 4 is still not certified as a medical device, of course, but it can give better notifications of things that you might want to get checked out.
The speaker in the Apple Watch Series 4 has been overhauled. It’s now 50 percent louder than the speaker in the Series 3 models. Apple says the louder volume is great for phone calls, the Walkie-Talkie feature in watchOS 5, and Siri requests.
Apple has also relocated the microphone on the Apple Watch Series 4 to the opposite side of the speaker instead of right next to it to reduce echo for phone calls that are more clear.
The Series 4 models are rated for immersion in water as deep as 50 meters thanks to seals and adhesives. The speaker, which needs air to produce sound, is the only point of ingress. Therefore, it has been designed to expel water from itself using sound vibrations after exposure to moisture.
Because it is rated for 50m immersion, the Apple Watch can be used when swimming in the ocean or in a pool.
Apple Watch Series 4 gps cellular is equipped with an upgraded Silicon-in-Package or SiP, which Apple calls the S4.
The S4, a dual-core 64-bit processor that’s custom-designed by Apple, is up to twice as fast as the previous-generation S3 chip in the Apple Watch Series 3. The S4 chip allows for improved battery life and the new health-related features that have been added to the Apple Watch.
With the S4 chip, apps open more quickly and performance is quicker across the entire operating system.
Apple Watch Series 4 models are equipped with an upgraded Apple-designed W3 chip that offers fast Wi-Fi and better power efficiency. Apple Watch Series 4 models, like Apple Watch Series 3 models, are available in two configurations: GPS and GPS + Cellular.
The series 4 GPS + Cellular Series 4 models feature an LTE connection while the GPS only models do not.
With an LTE connection, the Apple Watch is untethered from the iPhone. This means it does not require an iPhone or a known Wi-Fi network for an internet connection.
Apple Watch Series 4 models do not need an iPhone to receive calls and text messages, stream music from Apple Music, load maps to provide directions, and dozens of other things that require an iPhone with the GPS only models.
The Apple Watch is not entirely independent from the iPhone, though. The LTE connectivity of the Apple Watch Series 4 gps requires an iphone 5s or later to share a cellular plan and Apple Watch.
LTE in the Apple Watch is enabled through an integrated eSIM, with the display of the Apple Watch serving as a multifrequency antenna. Apple Watches with LTE are available in a limited number of countries.
All Apple Watch models run an operating system called watchOS. WatchOS 5, the newest version of watchOS, is installed on the Apple Watch Series 4 models at launch.
WatchOS 5 introduces new features like Walkie-Talkie for push-to-talk communication with friends, new Workout types and more.
According to Apple, it will last for around 18 hours before it needs a recharge using the included magnetic charging disk.
Apple changes its Apple Watch collection and updates available bands on a regular basis. However, the bands are sold separately since it can be interchanged.
